Avocado Trees Buyer's Guide
Grow Your Own Avocado Tree
Imagine picking fresh, creamy homegrown avocados—straight from your own backyard! These beautiful evergreen trees not only add a lush, tropical touch to your landscape but also provide nutrient-rich fruit for your kitchen. Whether tossed into salads or turned into homemade guacamole, avocado is a delicious, versatile treat.
We offer several cold-hardy avocado varieties, including types that can be grown in-ground in warmer regions or in containers in cooler climates.
Zone Compatibility
Your climate plays an important role in avocado success. Most avocado trees thrive in USDA Zones 8–11, but even if you live outside that range, you can still grow avocados in containers. Simply place your potted avocado in a sunny indoor space, such as a sunroom, greenhouse, or south-facing window during cold months. Move it outdoors once temperatures warm up.
Pollination Tips
Avocado trees are self-pollinating, so a single tree can produce fruit. However, planting both a Type A and Type B variety significantly increases your chances of a strong fruit set. Avocado flowering is unique—they bloom through a process called synchronous dichogamy, where male and female parts open at different times. A complementary pair helps ensure successful pollination.
If your trees bloom indoors while potted, hand pollination can help you get the most fruit.
Planting and Growing Tips
Avocado trees are fast-growing evergreens that do well in a wide range of environments. To thrive, they need:
- Mild temperatures and good drainage
- 6+ hours of sunlight daily
- Light humidity or protection from drying winds
When planting in the ground, space trees according to their mature height. For example, a Super Hass that grows up to 25 feet tall should be planted 25 feet from other trees.
If you’re growing in a container:
- Use a pot that’s as wide as it is tall for shallow roots
- Ensure excellent drainage
- Water deeply only after the soil has completely dried out
Most avocado varieties ripen in late summer to fall, typically August through October, depending on the type.
