Originating from Újfehértói, Hungary, the Balaton® Pie Cherry Tree is a cherished variety renowned for its versatility and luscious fruit, reminiscent of the Montmorency but larger and firmer in texture. This tree offers an extended cherry-picking season, allowing enthusiasts to savor fresh, bright red cherries for a longer harvest.

Introduced to the U.S. around 1998, It was introduced commercially under the name Balaton®. Interestingly, the name “Balaton” was chosen in honor of Lake Balaton in Hungary, despite the tree’s origin being far from the lake. This decision was influenced by the desire to maintain the Hungarian heritage of the tree’s name, with “Balaton” chosen for its easy pronunciation.
