About the Snapp Stayman Apple

The Snapp Stayman Apple tree is an improved strain of the antique Stayman, which apples are known for their beautiful, blushed-coloring and excellent eating quality and culinary uses. Snapp was discovered in the orchards of Alfred Snapp of Winchester, Virginia when he noticed a tree with brighter colored fruit and a spurring growth habit. This productive tree was a strain of the Red Stayman and Snapp became the most highly colored strain of Stayman of all.

The distinctive, sweet-tart flavor, snappy bite, and satisfying, firm texture is the same as the classic Stayman apple trees that were originally discovered by Dr. Stayman in 1866. Popular at U-pick orchards, this heirloom is great for eating fresh, making applesauce, apple butter, and other baking possibilities. Stayman apples are known to store well.

Growing the Snapp Stayman Apple Tree

Snapp Stayman is much like its parent, Red Stayman, which has little to no major pest and disease concerns. These trees are tolerant to many soil types and are considered cold-hardy.

Like other Stayman Apple tree varieties, the pollen of Snapp is sterile and it cannot pollinate other apple trees. It requires at least two different apple varieties nearby to be fruitful. Make room for the Snapp Stayman Apple tree in your orchard and you’ll be blessed with some of the best-tasting apples around!
