German Red Garlic Bulbs
Description
About German Red Garlic Bulbs
A widely popular variety that sets the standard for true garlic flavor! The German Red garlic is known for its full-bodied, strong, spicy flavor.
Hardneck garlic, like German Red, is also valued for its scapes, the flower stems that grow from the tops of garlic in early summer. Scapes are a delightful way to spice up recipes in early summer. While garlic is used widely as a flavoring in cooking, it is also known to have many health benefits.
Growing German Red Garlic
This large bright purple bulb contains 8-12, extra easy-to-peel, round, light brown cloves with some purple at the base. German Red Garlic keeps moderately well for a hardneck variety when properly cured and stored.
German Red can be grown in mild climates but will develop better quality and size in regions with cold winters. The color of the bulbs will become brighter if they are stressed by too much water.
It is recommended to plant garlic in the fall and by mid-summer, you will be delighted with a nice harvest. Separate the garlic bulb into individual cloves before planting. Plant the cloves pointed side up to ensure that when the stem grows it will be straight. Plant individual cloves approximately 2-4” deep, 4-6” apart, in rows 18-24” apart.
A half-pound set of garlic contains approximately 3-4 bulbs. Each bulb contains several cloves for planting. The actual quantity may vary depending on bulb size.
