About Berry Poppins® Winterberry
Berry Poppins® Winterberry (Ilex verticillata ‘FarrowBPop’) is a dwarf, heavy-fruiting winterberry holly that brings vibrant winter color to smaller landscapes. This compact deciduous shrub reaches just 3-4 feet in height and width, making it ideal for residential gardens. Known for its abundant red berries, Berry Poppins® is perfect for brightening winter landscapes, creating beautiful cut arrangements, and attracting wildlife, including birds. Unlike traditional varieties, its smaller size makes it suitable for even the most space-constrained areas.
How to Grow Berry Poppins® Winterberry
Berry Poppins® Winterberry thrives in full sun to partial sun and is hardy in USDA Zones 3-9, tolerating temperatures as low as -40°F. It grows well in wet soils and shaded conditions, making it versatile for various garden settings. This shrub blooms in spring with white flowers on old wood, though the blooms are less significant than its striking berries.
For fruit production, plant a male pollinator like Mr. Poppins® Winterberry Holly nearby; one male can pollinate up to five female plants. Plant the male within 50 feet of the female for optimal pollination. Berry Poppins® prefers well-drained soils with a pH level of 5.6 – 6.2 and requires average to high watering. Minimal pruning is needed, but you can remove whole branches for cut flowers or decoration without impacting the fruit set.
Add Berry Poppins® Winterberry to your garden for its compact size, heavy fruiting, and vibrant winter color. This native plant is also deer-resistant and enhances your landscape with both beauty and ecological benefits.
