About the Dunstan Hybrid Chestnut

The Dunstan Hybrid Chestnut (Castanea dentata ‘Dunstan’) is a moderately rapid-growing tree developed through a remarkable cross between American and Chinese chestnuts by Dr. Robert Dunstan. This hybrid enhances blight resistance and nut quality, helping to revive the legacy of the American Chestnut, which was nearly lost in the 20th century.

These easy-to-grow, disease-resistant trees produce delicious, large nuts borne in prickly burs, averaging 30 nuts per pound. Low in fat and oil, these nuts are high in protein and carbohydrates, making them a nutritious choice. Harvest typically occurs in mid-September, when the nuts drop and are ready for collection. This hybrid is well-known for its superior taste and size compared to Chinese and European chestnuts, with easy-to-peel nuts that are perfect for snacking or cooking.

How to Grow the Dunstan Hybrid Chestnut

Dunstan Chestnut seedling trees are the most widely planted chestnut trees in America, thriving from Maine and New York to Illinois, Wisconsin, and down to Texas and Florida. They are excellent for both commercial and backyard orchards and are particularly attractive to deer and wildlife.

For optimal growth, plant in a location with good air and water drainage, ideally on a south slope, and avoid frost pockets. These trees require a minimum of 300 chill hours for the nuts to ripen and are cold hardy to USDA Zones 5-9. For successful nut production, ensure you have at least two trees for cross-pollination; any Chinese chestnut can serve as a pollinator.

Bring back the legacy of the American Chestnut and enjoy the delicious, nutritious nuts from this remarkable seed-grown tree!
