About the Whiddon Pecan Tree

An early producer of large, protein-rich pecans!

Whiddon is a ‘Pawnee’ x ‘Desirable’ cross from the University of Georgia Pecan Breeding Program. This newer cultivar produces large (about 40 per pound), oblong pecans that are excellent in color without speckling. The large nuts have thick shells to protect against birds. Pecans are an excellent source of protein, often used in baking, desserts, and dry storage.

Plant pecan trees in an area with full sun, well-drained soil, and plenty of space. These trees can grow large, providing shade and shelter. Whiddon has superior scab resistance – performing well even in hot and humid climates. It is a productive tree that could benefit from thinning of the heavy crops.

When planning to add pecan trees to your yard or orchard, both Type I and Type II varieties need to be included to ensure proper pollination. Whiddon is a Type I cultivar.

Protandrous Type I

May be covered by USPP #29,316 or other patents.
