Description

About the Famosa Pistachio Tree

A male pollinating partner for increased yields! The Famosa pistachio tree is a cultivar of Pistacia vera, the species of plant that produces pistachio nuts. It is a deciduous tree that is native to the Middle East and is grown for its edible nuts, which are encased in a hard shell. The Famosa pistachio tree is known for its compatibility with Kerman, a popular female pistachio.

Pistachio nuts are a popular snack food and are used in a variety of culinary applications, including baking, cooking, and as a garnish. They are high in protein, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy choice for snacking.

Growing the Famosa Pistachio Tree

The Famosa pistachio tree can grow up to 20 feet tall and has a spreading canopy that can reach up to 35 feet wide. It has compound leaves that are composed of several small leaflets and are a bright, glossy green color. The male trees produce small, yellow flowers that are used to pollinate the female trees, which produce the green pistachio nuts.

Male pistachio trees are typically smaller and more slender than female trees and do not produce fruit. Pistachio trees require well-draining soil and a sunny location to thrive. They are drought-tolerant and can survive in hot, dry climates, but they do require regular watering during the growing season.

More about Pollination for Pistachio Trees

Pistachios are dioecious, which means that trees are either male or female. The female plants produce the seeds, or nuts, but they require timely pollination from the male trees. Pistachios rely on wind for pollination, making it important for the flowering times to overlap.

The Kerman (female) variety has been the industry standard in California for over 50 years. Famoso is being released to provide better pollination for Kerman. Famoso is a male pistachio, that produces good quantities of viable pollen and produces flowers at a younger tree age than Peters, and more closely matches the flowering dates of Kerman than does Peters, especially in seasons where Kerman has an extended bloom.
