Fertilizing Quince Trees
Iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, molybdenum, copper, and boron are minor elements that are very important to quince and most soils are low in these elements. Look for an organic mixture that contains these elements.
NOTE: This is part 6 in a series of 11 articles. For a complete background on how to grow quince trees, we recommend starting from the beginning.
Fertilizing Tips
- When planting, do not put fertilizer in planting hole.
- When fertilizing, water or rake in the mixture evenly under the entire canopy of the tree, avoiding a 4-inch area around the trunk.
- Fertilize no more than 2 times each year, beginning in March and no later than July. Fertilizing after July may promote new growth around the time the plant needs to go dormant.
- Premature fruit drop and the spread of fire blight can be caused by over fertilization.
