The frequency of watering will depend on the category of the herb’s water needs. Herbs that prefer wet soil should be watered once the soil surface has dried out to a depth of about one inch. On the other hand, herbs that prefer dry soil should be allowed to dry several inches below the surface before adding water. In a container, allow at least the upper half of the soil to dry. It is important to avoid letting the soil dry out completely for an extended time, as this can stress the plant. Overwatering can also be detrimental, as it can lead to root rot and other diseases. It is important to water the soil directly and avoid getting water on the foliage, as this can also lead to disease.
