Fertilizing Evergreens
There are several fertilizer options available for evergreen trees and shrubs, with their own suggested application rates and appropriate application seasons. Please read fertilizer labels thoroughly to ensure you’re following the suggested advice.
However, here are some general considerations for evergreen care.

Slow-Release Fertilizers: Choose slow-release fertilizers for evergreen plants. These provide a steady supply of nutrients over an extended period, promoting balanced and sustained growth while minimizing the risk of nutrient runoff.
Balanced Formulas: Opt for balanced fertilizer formulations, such as 10-10-10 or 14-14-14, to ensure a well-rounded supply of essential nutrients. Evergreen trees and shrubs generally benefit from nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as micronutrients like iron.
Application Technique: Apply fertilizer evenly over the root zone of the evergreen trees and shrubs, extending beyond the drip line. Water the area thoroughly after application to help nutrients penetrate the soil.
Organic Fertilizers: Consider using organic fertilizers, such as well-rotted compost or manure, to enhance soil structure and microbial activity. These organic amendments provide a slow release of nutrients and contribute to long-term soil health.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of your evergreen plants. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulates temperature, and gradually breaks down to contribute organic matter, enriching the soil.
Avoid Fertilizing Stressed Plants: Refrain from fertilizing stressed or newly planted evergreens. Allow them some time to establish their root systems before introducing additional nutrients.
Micronutrient Supplements: If you had your soil tested, and it indicates deficiencies in specific micronutrients, consider using targeted supplements to address those deficiencies. This ensures that your evergreen trees and shrubs receive a well-rounded nutrient profile.
Fertilizing Evergreens Growing in Containers: There’s a great benefit to growing some evergreens in containers. This allow you to enjoy their beauty, wherever you please! However, because there can be limited access to nutrients as they’re not growing in the ground, you should consider fertilizing more frequent. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer or controlled-release pellets designed for container plants.
