To make strawberry pie!

Regarding the "Bushel and Berries" series of strawberry plants: Does "cascading" mean the plant makes runners or just that it gets long stems that dangle down? I looked on the Bushel and Berries website and didn't find clarification there. Thanks!

Hi Jill, this is a very good question. These berries do produce runners and we use the term "cascading" as their stems will dangle down from the container.

Planting strawberries in the fall ?

Planting strawberries in the fall can be a great idea, especially in regions with milder winters, as it allows the plants to establish strong root systems before spring. Here's how to successfully plant strawberries in the fall:

Choose the Right Type: Select June-bearing varieties for fall planting, as they tend to establish well over winter and will produce a larger crop the following spring.

Prepare the Soil: Strawberries prefer well-drained, sandy loam soil with a slightly acidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5). Add organic matter like compost to improve the soil structure and fertility.

Planting Location: Choose a sunny spot where the strawberries will get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Spacing: Space plants about 12-18 inches apart, leaving 3-4 feet between rows. This gives the plants enough room to spread.

Watering: Water the plants well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until the plants are established.

Mulching: Apply a layer of straw or mulch after the ground begins to freeze to protect the roots during winter. This also helps conserve moisture and prevents weeds.

Fall planting allows the strawberries to establish strong roots over the winter, leading to a more abundant harvest in the spring. Be mindful to protect the plants during extreme winter weather with additional mulch or row covers if necessary.

How much sun does this require?

This requires full sun, which is typically 6-8 hours of direct sun light.

Strong and healthy
These plants came and were strong and healthy. They’ve grown very well in their hanging baskets despite the south Texas heat wave we’ve experienced here this year. Made lots of little berries but most not big enough to bother eating but I haven’t had a whole lot of big berries from most of my strawberry plants in the past… maybe I just don’t know the secret yet to growing big berries!
